Gratitude

Gratitude Journal
Quite a while ago I shared why I started a gratitude journal and not long after that I offered a peek inside at a few of my entries. Since then, I’m disappointed to admit I haven’t remained consistent with my gratitude journal. There’s really no legitimate excuse other than pure laziness because regardless of how difficult things have been at times I’m certain there was always something to be appreciative of, regardless how small. That little notebook hasn’t left my bedside table, so it’s time to dust it off and start filling the pages once again.

Yesterday was one of those more challenging types of days where one thing after another seems to pile on top of each other and you struggle to find even one thing to be grateful for, let alone three things, which is my goal every day. I wrote a mostly very whiny post about how a power outage basically ruined my entire day because it kept me from watching a football game on television, among other things. Today, though, I’ve exercised, taken a hot shower, and watched a movie on a large TV that’s mounted on the wall and as I sit here I realize there’s plenty to be grateful for, especially since there are so many people in my area going to bed without electricity. Many of them not even sure when their power will be restored. So tonight before I climb into my warm bed and fall asleep on a soft pillow these are the three things I’ll enter into my gratitude journal for today……..

  1. My treadmill – On a day like today when my mental health really needed a workout and I wasn’t able to get outside for a walk, I was able to get one in the comfort of my own home.
  2. Playing cribbage with my husband. Paul isn’t ordinarily home in the middle of the day on a Tuesday, so this was a treat I won’t soon forget. (Especially since I won 3 out of 4 games.)
  3. My friend Mariana. She might live inside my computer, but she’s usually the first person I send a message when I have something exciting to share, need to vent, or need some words of encouragement.
  4. Electricity. I know I said I aim for three entries in my journal every night, but this one is worthy of an additional spot. Electricity is truly one of those things you don’t appreciate until it’s gone. Most of the things I accomplished today could not have been possible if it wasn’t for electricity, so tonight when I go to bed I’m a little extra grateful to be turning off a light rather than blowing out a candle.

What are you grateful for today? The sunshine, perhaps? I know that’s always one of my favorites.
