Have you ever looked at your teeth in the mirror and wished you had a whiter smile? I know I have, but it’s never been something I dwelled on. I think I even tried some of those whitening strips several years ago, but I didn’t think the result was all that noticeable. Since then I’ve drank my share of coffee and red wine and enjoyed many pieces of dark chocolate, so the brightness of my teeth has definitely been affected over the years. It’s not like I’m a teeth model, so I honestly never felt like taking the time to whiten my teeth, especially since I also thought it was something I’d never be able to afford. I was recently introduced to Smile Brilliant and all that changed.
Disclosure: I was provided with a complimentary teeth whitening kit from Smile Brilliant to facilitate this review, but all opinions are my own.
Smile Brilliant – How it Works
- Order your system, which comes with everything you need, including the mold to make your impressions and a prepaid envelope (for U.S.) to send them back in. It takes about 15 minutes to create your impressions in the comfort of your own home.
- The lab uses your molds to create custom-fitted trays, which are exact copies of your teeth. I don’t remember the exact time frame, but mine arrived back to me pretty quickly.
- Your trays arrive and you get to kick your feet up and relax while Smile Brilliant goes to work on giving you a brighter smile. All you have to do is add the whitening gel to your trays, insert them into your mouth, set a timer, and watch your favorite television show. Or read a book. It really doesn’t matter what you choose to do, but just relax, okay?
Smile Brilliant Teeth Whitening – The Pros and Cons
Let’s face it, there are pros and cons to pretty much everything in life and teeth whitening is no different. Mostly my experience with Smile Brilliant was a really good one, but there were a couple things that made it a little challenging. They aren’t things that would prevent me from recommending this option to you, but just a couple things to consider.
The Pros
- A super supportive and helpful team who was patient and willing to answer any questions I had regarding the teeth-whitening process.
- Clear and detailed instructions with pictures. I’m a visual learner, so having those photos helped me a great deal.
- Super easy to use. Seriously. It’s doesn’t get much easier than using a syringe to squeeze whitening gel into a custom-made tray that you then insert into your mouth for a perfectly snug and comfortable fit.
- No appointment needed. I decided when (usually in the evening) and for how long I was going to do each whitening session. The only challenge with this making sure it was well before my bedtime (see cons).
- A whiter smile! I can honestly say I noticed a difference pretty quickly, but I started to really pay attention after about 7 days. I stuck to short sessions (around an hour each) and even skipped a few nights due to sensitivity, so I was surprised and excited to see the results I was getting. I realize years of stains don’t magically disappear overnight so I kept my expectations pretty low, but it didn’t take much longer than that for Smile Brilliant to brighten my smile and having me admiring my teeth in the mirror.
The Cons
Like I said earlier, there were only a couple things that I’d consider negatives about my experience, but negative is probably too harsh because even though they were things that affected my whitening sessions they are not things that made me want to give up completely.
- Timing. Smile Brilliant recommends doing your sessions in the evening before bed so nothing touches your teeth for several hours. This is definitely good advice, but it proved to be a little tricky for me because there were a couple nights when I started too late and nearly fell asleep on the couch with the tray in my mouth. Again, a minor “con” if you ask me, but definitely something to consider when your scheduling your sessions.
- Sensitivity. I knew going in that I have sensitive teeth, which I communicated to my Smile Brilliant team member. She was so helpful and put my nerves at ease, but boy was it uncomfortable. To be fair, I didn’t experience discomfort every single time I applied the whitening gel, but there were a few times when it hurt initially. The good thing is that it calmed down after about 30 minutes and the desensitizing gel treatment helped a great deal. The desensitizing gel is applied the same way as the whitening gel and I always left mine in for the full amount of recommended time (around 20 minutes).
All in all the benefits far outweighed the discomfort for me and I’m pleased and grateful for the results I see every day when I look in the mirror. I honestly don’t feel my photos do those results justice, but we all know the mirror doesn’t lie, right?
