What I Would Do With a Million Dollars – NaBloPoMo Day 1

I’ve made several attempts in the past to get better at blogging. By better I mean posting more regularly, but I also mean that I would like to improve my writing skills. In an attempt to stay motivated and hold myself accountable, so to speak, I signed up for BlogHer’s NaBloPoMo, with the ultimate goal of writing something every day for whole month of November. That will be a lot of writing since up until now I’ve written so sporadically, but I’m ready for the challenge! One of the things I like most about NaBloPoMo is that BlogHer has teamed up with WordPress to provide weekday writing prompts for anyone who needs a little help with getting the creative juices flowing. Since today is the first day I thought I would use their prompt to get me started, but I’m hoping as the month progresses I will need less help to come up with ideas.

NaBloPoMo Day 1

If you found one million dollars in the morning and had to spend it by nightfall, what would you do with the money?

Okay, this is a tough one, but think I know how I would spend a million dollars in one day if I was so lucky as to have it land in my possession. I’m not going to lie, the first thing I would do is take care of my family. By that I mean I would immediately purchase a share in the Disney Vacation Club as well as annual park passes for my entire family. The next thing I would do is purchase a modest home for us to move into and then I’d hit my local car dealership and buy a vehicle that is the perfect combination of fun and practical. What? I’m sure that totally exists! After taking care of my family and bringing us to a level of comfortable living, I would then turn my attention to some of the charities that matter most to me.

One charity that means a lot to me is Feeding America because nobody should ever go to bed hungry, especially children, but I’d place my immediate focus (since I only have one day afterall) on my local community and donate enough money for a huge warehouse to be built because they will need a great deal of storage space when I then donate a big fat check to cover the cost of filling that storage facility with as much food as possible. Gosh, that would make my heart so happy.

The next, and possibly most personally important, thing I would do with the money is create an organization that supports adult individuals with autism. Cody turned 18 last year and while that was an exciting milestone in many ways, it was also one of the most frightening days of his life for me. There are so many wonderful programs and supports available to families of young children with autism, but when they become an adult they often get forgotten and lost in the shuffle. I realize I could make this my mission regardless of how much, or how little, money I have, but having thousands and thousands of dollars to get started would certainly make the challenge a little be easier.

Okay, so now that I’m done daydreaming about the possibility of a million dollars falling into my lap, I need to clean up my kitchen, vacuum the floor and fold some laundry before I begin my work day. Tell me, what would you do with a million dollars if you only had one day to spend it?
