Yes, you read that title correctly. The lunch lady (that’s what Nick called her in this story) visited health class on Friday. I am guessing she would have preferred a day when my Nick was not in school.
Apparently, she wanted some input from the students, and Nick had plenty.
Yes, I drill information into his moldable little mind quite well, thank you very much!
He asked why they have “wheat” bread and not “whole wheat”- yes folks, there is a difference. A huge difference.
Her response: “We serve what they give us.”
Then the moment that caused the entire rest of the class to shriek, but would have made me stand and applaud as a proud Momma – Nick asked about the nachos, the very coveted nachos. You have to understand, these middle schoolers loose all touch with reality and their surroundings when nachos are on the menu in the cafeteria. They sniff them out around corners and can see them ten table lengths away. They stumble over themselves and others to get in line to purchase their own little tray filled with nothing, as far as nutrition goes. But dammit, they taste good.
Nick asked why the cheese has to come out of a machine that looks like the ones that soft serve ice cream comes out of and then he asked why they can’t make nachos from scratch. In the oven. Crazy kid!
Lunch Lady’s response: “We can’t make nachos that way.”
You all know that machine cheese is not really cheese, right? Okay, glad we got that out of the way.
Needless to say, Nick wasn’t winning any popularity contests in health class on that day.
In the midst of all their yelling his name to BE QUIET, Nick looked at one of them and said, “more than 50 percent of the seventh graders in this school are overweight.” (a fact he may have heard from his Mom). A couple of the responses from the other kids made me almost fall over in my chair as Nick retold them to me.
One reaction: “I don’t really care.”
Another: “We play sports. We exercise. A lot.”
Is that really the message this child gets? That if he exercises and plays sports he can put whatever he wants into his body?

That is fantastic. You must be sooo proud!
Sad concensus, huh?
Thank you Jen! Yes, I was very proud! Have to admit, I was surprised that he spoke up! 🙂
Definitely Ros! Gotta get through to these kids!
