Bringing joy with dessert

I love to bake. Whether it’s muffins on Saturday morning or a birthday cake for one of my sons, I love creating something special and sweet, and I especially like eating those treats. I have a crazy sweet tooth and have often been known to take a sliver of every single dessert at a party because it’s simply too hard to choose just one. Beyond baking for my family I love to whip up something special for friends and extended family. When it comes to small parties or larger gatherings I’ve come to be the one who brings the dessert. Well, there might be other desserts, but mine is always the favorite. What?! That’s what they all tell me, I’m just passing the information along to you what’s been shared with me because I’m humble and certainly not one to toot my own horn or mixing beaters, but a girl likes a compliment every now and then.

There’s just something about dessert that can make an occasion that much more special, especially a holiday gathering when we all give ourselves permission to indulge a little and enjoy everything savory and sweet in sight. In my case the dessert I prepare happens to be the thing that everyone can’t wait to arrive. Are they excited to see me? Give me a hug? Say Merry Christmas? Sure, eventually they get to all of those things, but first they scan with their eyes and reach with their grubby considerate little hands to help carry in the container that’s filled the decadence that everyone can’t wait to reach in and devour. Many have been known to inhale one or two before they even take a bite of the main course for dinner. I suppose I should take it as a compliment and truly I do. It makes me so happy to spend endless hours in the kitchen create something so special that everyone looks forward to, especially at the holidays. For some I know it’s the only time of year that they eat my dessert, making it that much more special so I really like to pour a lot of love and attention into making something that’s memorable and worthy of milk guzzling or a little extra wine sipping. You know, to wash it all down.
