A Little Gratitude & How a Shop Vac Saved the Day

Gratitude Journal

I haven’t written a gratitude post in a really long time and all it took was a trip to my basement for laundry duty to make me think I needed to remedy that. It’s literally been raining here for days. It’s like Spring only more annoying because Winter is next instead of Summer. So like I said, this morning I hauled the hamper down to the basement with the intention of starting a load of laundry, but I got half way down the stairs and noticed the floor was flooded with water. I sent a text to my husband (who was at play rehearsal) that read something like OMFG the basement is flooded, plugged in the shop vac and got to work cleaning up the pond in my cellar. I cursed mother nature, thought about what a dream it is to own a home, and sucked up every last drop of water. Then I plugged in a fan to dry up the floor, started that load of laundry, and went back upstairs to pour myself a large cup of coffee.

Gratitude on a Gloomy Day

In the middle of my cursing, both in my head and out loud, I reminded myself there are things I should be grateful for even when the weather is being a huge jerk.

  1. I’m super grateful for the non-fun purchase we made a while back of a Shop Vac Wet/Dry Vacuum. That one is very similar to the one we purchased and it was one of the smartest things we ever bought because there aren’t enough towels in our entire house to clean up the mess that was down there this morning. Yay for practical homeowner purchases!
  2. That post-cleanup cup of coffee. I’m always grateful for coffee.
  3. I’m thankful the water didn’t cause damage to anything of value in the basement.
  4. Ooh, my husband just got back home, so he can suck up the water if the basement floods again today – thanks sweetie!
  5. Ingredients in the kitchen to make Whoopie Pies because after the morning I had I totally plan to do some baking this afternoon.

I’m generally a pretty positive person, but some days it’s good to intentionally write a few things down I’m grateful for and a gloomy, rainy day like today is a perfect excuse to change my focus. At least for a few minutes.

  1. Oh my goodness! I am so sorry to hear about the basement flooding. Was it the rain that caused it, or something else? Either way, glad you had the ShopVac handy. I keep meaning to get one of those because the one I had gave out a few years ago. Luckily, I haven’t absolutely needed it.

  2. oh no! I hope this all got cleaned up quickly. I finally made my way over here as it’s been a crazy week+!

And Whoopie Pies? Do tell me more. I don’t get to Maine anymore, so I don’t get to have ’em unless I track down the local food truck, ohhh, wait, that food truck has a permanent location now. I wonder if they have them there? (Thinking out loud!) But they have always been the most crowded. Oy. What to do, what to do? 🙂
