This past weekend I got the bright idea to make some sweet holiday treats with the intention of packing them in cute little boxes and giving them away today. The problem is that I wasn’t able to come up with as many people as I had hoped to give them to so I was left with containers filled with cookies that my family definitely doesn’t need to eat. Next time I should probably come up with a list of names before I spend an entire day in my kitchen baking. If there is a next time.
So I was standing in my kitchen yesterday morning staring at all the goodies I had so lovingly prepared and it suddenly occurred to me that my local soup kitchen might like an assortment of Christmas cookies for the folks they serve tirelessly every single day. I dug up (okay I Google’d it) the phone number and called to see if they would like my most sugary of donations and I swear I could practically see the smile on the face of the person on the other end of the phone. She told me they would absolutely love whatever I could bring because aside from the lunch they serve every day, they also offer a coffee hour every morning and my goodies would make a great addition. I decided to package up the treats and deliver them with the hopes of bringing a tiny bit of Christmas cheer to those in my community who are less fortunate this holiday season. While I’m there I also plan to ask what I can do to help on a regular basis starting in 2014 because I can’t think of a better “resolution” than to help those in need.
Update: I delivered the cookies first thing this morning and was greeted by two workers who offered an overwhelming amount of gratitude. All I did was hand them a box of baked treats, some of which were overcooked, but they were sincerely appreciative and couldn’t wait to put them out later this morning during their coffee hour. I was in a hurry so I didn’t have a chance to talk to them about how I can help going forward, but I will definitely call very soon because I’d like to make a small difference and I think this soup kitchen is a wonderful place to start.
